One Tree Psychological and Therapeutic Services in Edmonton offers faith-based counselling for individuals who want their faith to be part of their therapeutic journey. Our clinicians bring knowledge of faith practices, beliefs and scripture into sessions, always guided by your needs and preferences. Whether you are strengthening your faith, questioning it, or healing from religious trauma, we provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for growth and well-being.
For many people, faith is a central part of how they understand themselves, make decisions and find meaning. Having a therapist who understands and respects that part of you can make it easier to open up and feel truly understood.
Faith-based counselling looks different for everyone. Faith can be the main focus of your sessions, or it can simply be a shared foundation while you work on other concerns. You decide how much faith is part of the conversation.
What is Faith-Based Counselling?
Faith-based counselling is a therapeutic approach that brings a person’s faith into the counselling process. Our faith-based clinicians have knowledge of specific faith traditions, including their practices, beliefs and scriptures, and can draw on that understanding to help you navigate personal struggles, make decisions and solve problems.
Depending on your preferences, sessions may include prayer, faith-based mindfulness or meditation, reflection on scripture and its meaning for your life, or encouragement to connect with faith practices and communities that support your healing.
Because each clinician works from their own faith background, not every clinician will be the right fit for every person. If you’re interested in faith-based counselling, we encourage you to check that your clinician is familiar with your faith. Our team is happy to help you find the right match.
Who Can Benefit From Faith-Based Counselling?
People seek faith-based counselling for many reasons, including:
- Navigating a crisis of faith or a period of questioning
- Exploring how faith fits into your life, values and decisions
- Working through personal difficulties with your faith or religious community
- Healing from religious trauma, whether or not you choose to keep your faith
- Considering changing or leaving your faith
- Addressing concerns unrelated to religion, such as anxiety, depression, grief, relationships or life transitions, with a clinician who understands your faith
- Finding clarity, peace and a sense of security during difficult times
Our Approach
At One Tree Psychological, faith-based counselling is client-centred, flexible and nonjudgmental. We follow your lead. Some clients want faith to be the primary focus of therapy, while others simply prefer a therapist who shares their faith background for comfort and common ground. Our clinicians will never impose beliefs or practices on you, and faith-based elements are only included with your consent.
We also recognize that faith and organized religion are not always the same thing. Your personal, internal beliefs and values may not always align with the structures of institutional religion. Therapy can be a space to explore that difference and to find a path toward your goals that honours your faith, even if that path is unconventional.
As always, One Tree is an inclusive space. Our faith-based counselling is welcoming and affirming of members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and of people at every stage of their faith journey.
Depending on your needs, our work together may include:
- Integrating prayer, meditation or faith-based mindfulness practices
- Reflecting on scripture and readings and how they relate to your life
- Processing questions, doubts or changes in your faith
- Supporting healing from religious trauma
- Building on your strengths, values and sources of hope
- Using evidence-based therapeutic approaches alongside the perspective of faith
