At One Tree Psychological and Therapeutic Services, we provide compassionate divorce child and youth therapy in Edmonton to help with navigating family change, including separation and divorce. If your family is going through a transition, our dedicated team helps kids and teenagers feel seen, supported and resilient.
What is Divorce Child and Youth Therapy?
Separation or divorce is rarely just an adult matter, the impact on children and youth can be significant. Many young people feel confusion, worry about being responsible, frustration or even anger.
Our therapy sessions focus on creating an environment where children/youth can:
- Express how they feel about what’s happening.
- Clarify misunderstandings (for example: “Is this my fault?”).
- Build coping strategies for change, new parenting schedules or blended family dynamics.
- Strengthen emotional regulation, especially when things feel uncertain.
When to Seek Support
You might consider divorce child and youth therapy in Edmonton if your child or teenager is:
- Struggling with frequent sadness, anxiety or acting out after separation/divorce.
- Having difficulty adjusting to new routines, households, or co-parenting schedules.
- Displaying signs of emotional withdrawal, behaviour change, declining school performance or increased irritability.
- Expressing confusion or worry about their role in the family changes.
- Wanting a safe space to talk about the “why” and “what’s next” of the family transition.
Our Approach
Our clinicians use an approach that is specially tailored for your child:
- Age-appropriate techniques – Sessions may involve talk, art, play and structured reflection depending on the child’s stage.
- Collaborative involvement – We often include caregivers/parents in part of the process to strengthen support systems.
- Safe and neutral space – We provide a non-judgmental setting where children can explore feelings without worrying about “taking sides.”
- Practical tools for families – We assist with communication strategies, co-parenting transitions and establishing new routines that support the child’s sense of stability.

What to Expect in Your First Session
We understand that starting therapy can feel like a big step, for both children and parents. We will begin by doing an intake session with the parent(s) or caregiver(s) to discuss your concerns, the child’s background and what’s been happening since the separation or divorce. Your child will not attend this session. This intake can occur with the separated parents jointly or each parent can attend their own intake. The only way that a clinician is able to see a child with only one parent’s consent is if there is court documentation that states the parent has the sole decision-making authority for your child’s medical decisions.
After the intake session is complete, your therapist will then spend time one on one with your child or teen to help them feel comfortable and begin building trust. Through conversation or play (depending on age), we gently explore how they’ve been feeling and what changes they’re adjusting to.
