At One Tree Psychological and Therapeutic Services, we provide EMDR therapy in Edmonton and surrounding areas to help individuals heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. While painful memories can feel overwhelming or “stuck”, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-supported therapy that helps the brain process those experiences so they no longer hold the same power.
Our trained EMDR therapists offer a calm, supportive environment where you can move beyond the impact of the past and reclaim a greater sense of peace, confidence, and self-understanding.
What is EMDR?
EMDR was developed in the late 1980s by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro and has since been recognized as an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related issues.
In essence, EMDR is a structured, evidence based therapeutic approach that helps people recover from trauma and distressing life experiences without having to relive every detail of their experience. During sessions, our trained clinician guides you through sets of bilateral stimulation while you focus on specific thoughts or feelings related to the event. Through this process, your brain reprocesses traumatic memories and store them in a healthier, more adaptive way.
Ultimately, EMDR helps the nervous system integrate those experiences so you can respond to the present rather than being pulled into the past.

What EMDR Can Help With
EMDR therapy can support healing from:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety, panic, or phobias
- Childhood trauma or abuse
- Grief and loss
- Distressing memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
- Relationship or attachment wounds
- Self-esteem and performance anxiety
Many clients report feeling lighter, calmer, and more in control after completing EMDR sessions.
Our Approach
At One Tree Psychological, EMDR therapy is always conducted in a safe, trauma-informed, and client-centred manner. Our therapists integrate EMDR with other modalities such as mindfulness, CBT, and somatic approaches to support your unique goals and pace.
Before beginning reprocessing, we focus on creating safety and stability and teaching grounding, self-soothing and emotional regulation skills to ensure you have the tools to manage emotions before processing trauma.
Once you feel ready, we move through EMDR’s eight phase protocol, designed to promote deep, lasting healing.
“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” — Peter A. Levine
